1. The short version
Trading leveraged foreign exchange and contracts for difference is high risk. A significant proportion of retail accounts lose money. You can lose your entire deposit, and in some market conditions more than your deposit.
2. Leverage magnifies both directions
Leverage lets you control a position far larger than your balance. A 1% move against a position at 1:100 leverage wipes out the margin committed to it. The same leverage that produces an outsized gain produces an outsized loss just as quickly.
Margin calls and automatic stop-outs can close your positions at a loss without warning, at whatever price is available at that moment.
3. Market volatility and gaps
Prices can move sharply on economic data, central bank decisions, political events and market opens after a weekend. In fast markets, spreads widen and the price at which your order fills may be materially worse than the price you saw — this is slippage.
A stop-loss order reduces risk but does not guarantee an exit price. Where the market gaps through your stop, your position closes at the next available price.
4. Risks specific to copy trading
- You are mirroring another person's decisions, including their mistakes and their losing runs.
- A published track record describes the past. It is not a forecast, and a strategy's worst drawdown may still be ahead of it.
- Differences in your balance, leverage, broker spread and execution latency mean your results will not exactly match the provider's.
- An Expert Trader may change strategy, increase risk or stop trading without notice.
- Service and performance charges reduce your net return, and service charges are payable whether or not the strategy is profitable.
5. Risks specific to automated strategies
- Backtests are simulations. They can look far better than live results, particularly if a strategy was tuned to historical data.
- Market conditions change. A strategy built for trending markets can bleed steadily in a range.
- Technical failures — server outages, connectivity loss, broker API faults — can leave positions open or unmanaged.
- Automation removes hesitation, which means a flawed rule set can lose money faster than a human would.
6. Other risks to weigh
- Counterparty risk — the broker or prop firm holding your capital may fail or restrict withdrawals.
- Currency risk — if your account currency differs from your home currency, exchange rates affect your real return.
- Overnight financing — positions held overnight incur swap charges that accumulate over time.
- Regulatory risk — rules on leverage, product availability and marketing differ by country and can change.
- Tax — you are responsible for reporting and paying any tax due on trading results where you live.
7. Is this suitable for you?
Before trading, ask yourself honestly:
- Can I afford to lose the entire amount I am about to commit?
- Do I understand leverage, margin, spread and drawdown well enough to explain them to someone else?
- Have I set a maximum loss I will accept before I start, and will I respect it?
- Am I making this decision calmly, rather than to recover a previous loss?
If the answer to any of these is no, take more time or seek independent financial advice from a licensed adviser in your country.
